Welcome to the route of the Old Federal Road!
In 1805, the United States and Cherokee Nation agreed in the Treaty of Tellica to establish the Federal Road throughout Cherokee territory.
Georgia's Old Federal Road was a primary route of transportation in north Georgia from 1805 to the 1860s. This road played an important part in state history covering four historic periods:
Early 1800's: U.S.-Cherokee Nation relations
1829: Georgia's Gold Rush near Dahlonega
1838: "Trail of Tears" involving the Cherokees' forced re-location
1863-64: Civil War Battles of Chickamauga and Atlanta
The driving tour explores this heritage and takes the driver as close to the orginal route as possible.
