Bowling Green, the largest city in the cave-carved south central area of the state, offers things you don't find in the typical Kentucky town. You can take an underground boat tour on the river which flows under the city, see classic Corvettes and tour the only factory in the world where the famous car is made plus fill your days with fun at the lake or sampling the area's history.
Home to Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green's main claim to fame is still the Chevrolet Corvette. The National Corvette Museum features more than 75 cars including prototypes. The GM Corvette/Cadillac XLR Assembly Plant here offers weekday tours. The fast car theme is continued at Raceworld, a NASCAR family attraction with two race tracks featuring scale cars. Beech Bend Raceway Park offers a family amusement park, drag strip, oval track and campground.
There's only one place in Kentucky to experience an underground boat tour on the river said to be the shortest and deepest in the world: Lost River Cave and Valley. Take the walking tour along the river's edge to hear Native American stories and view the butterfly habitat. Other outdoor recreation includes golfing at several area courses, soccer and disc golfing. Try canoeing on the Barren River that flows through Bowling Green.
Kentucky Museum, located at Western Kentucky University, presents objects of the state's history and culture such as quilts. Take in more area history on the Civil War Driving Tour and see forts, historic homes and a cave. Restored Riverview at Hobson Grove was once used for storage of Confederate munitions.
Dining options include Mariah's, located downtown in the town's oldest brick house, serving steaks and seafood. For more casual fare, try Teresa's Restaurant for home-cooked fare "at hometown prices". Nightlife options include university concerts and events as well as performances at Phoenix Theatre, Public Theatre of Kentucky, a professional, not for profit company.
